Cody Gakpo revelling in the amazing feeling of playing for Liverpool

Cody Gakpo admits that it has been really amazing for him to play for Liverpool and at Anfield so far but aims to make the next season better.

The Dutch international arrived at the club from PSV Eindhoven during the January transfer window. He was the PSV captain and had an excellent World Cup before joining Liverpool.

After a slow start to life here, understandably so given he arrived in the middle of the season and came into a team that was struggling, the 24-year-old has settled in well and looked good in the last few weeks.

Here’s what Gakpo said when asked about his time at Liverpool thus far (h/t Liverpool website):

“To be honest, it’s really amazing. The fans, I cannot describe them!

“They are with us even in the bad times and in the good times as well so I really appreciate all of them and let’s make the next season a better one.”

A few days ago, Gakpo thanked fellow Dutchman and a senior at Liverpool Virgil van Dijk for helping him settle into the team. He classed van Dijk as almost like a big brother.

Although the former PSV skipper has played in different positions, Jurgen Klopp has used him most as a false nine, a position soon to be permanently vacated by Roberto Firmino as he leaves in the summer.

Gakpo will have a big job of emulating the good things Firmino used to do from that position. The initial signs are that the Dutchman will do well in that regard.

The good thing about the 24-year-old is that he looks physically stronger than Firmino and has better aerial abilities. If he adds the final pieces to his game, Liverpool will have a complete number nine on their hands for years to come.

With regard to making the next season better, it is up to Gakpo and the whole squad to step up and improve the results. Getting close to Manchester City in the league and challenging for the cup competitions must be a bare minimum.
