Roberto De Zerbi hopes the attraction European football keeps Liverpool target Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi hopes that the lure of European football keeps Liverpool target Alexis Mac Allister at the Amex Stadium.

After beating Southampton on Sunday, Brighton have all but sealed sixth position in the league table. It means the Seagulls are set to play Europa League football next season for the first time in their history.

Mac Allister played a key role in pushing De Zerbi’s men this far. The versatile Argentine midfielder has got 10 goals and two assists in 33 league appearances. He has played in multiple midfield positions to help the team in whichever way possible.

If we believe the latest reports, Mac Allister is on his way to Liverpool this summer with personal terms almost agreed. Here’s what De Zerbi said when asked about the future of the 24-year-old and Moises Caicedo, who is also linked with a move away (h/t Evening Standard):

“We can offer Moises and Alexis the opportunity to play in Europe. Our level is bigger now. They are very good guys and it will help. I think for myself and the club but also for the players – they have one life and we can’t decide for them.”

From Liverpool’s viewpoint, Mac Allister must sign for them in the coming window. The Reds need a player like him in their squad to bolster the quality level of the midfield department.

Jurgen Klopp can use the 24-year-old both as a number eight or as an attacking midfielder if required. He can offer goals from midfield and can impact the game in and between both boxes.

There are a lot of uncanny similarities between Mac Allister and Ilkay Gundogan with regard to how they play and their versatility. Klopp worked with the latter at Borussia Dortmund and got huge success. The hope is that he does the same with the former, this time at Liverpool.

The other bit is that we hope the 2022 World Cup winner signs before the pre-season starts. A full pre-season with the squad would help in his integration and tactical understanding.
