Montpellier open to the summer exit of Liverpool target Elye Wahi

Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin has admitted he would be open to selling Elye Wahi this summer. The 20-year-old is primarily a centre-forward but is equally capable of playing on either wing.

The player saw himself linked with a move to Liverpool over the summer window, but a move for Darwin Nunez meant we did not need another forward. The departure of Roberto Firmino now means we do not have the same numbers in attack, but with the options we have, we sit well at the moment.

Speaking of Wahi though, he has been in fine form this season, scoring 17 goals and getting six assists in 31 games across the entirety of Ligue 1 this season. He has until 2025 (Transfermarkt) on his contract with Montpellier, and that puts the ball in their court when it comes to negotiations.

Speaking of Wahi and his future, here is what Montpellier’s president had to say via Liverpool ECHO:

“Our position is very clear. Elye has an exit voucher. If he finds an offer that suits him, he will leave. And if this is not the case, he will stay. We know that the priority, in the event of Elye’s departure, is to recruit a centre-forward.”

Should Liverpool pursue Wahi?

Should Liverpool successfully acquire Wahi, he would undoubtedly add depth and quality to their attacking options.

Known for their high-intensity style of play and attacking prowess, the club’s new-look attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo could benefit from the addition of a talented youngster like Wahi. Klopp is renowned for his ability to nurture young talents and provide them with a platform to flourish.

However, with the number of options available at the club, which includes the first-choice trio and Diogo Jota with Darwin Nunez, there is little requirement for a new attacker, except to provide some backup for Mohamed Salah.

Wahi’s arrival at Liverpool would not only enhance the team’s attacking prowess but also align with the club’s philosophy of building for the future. But Wahi’s signing should be only from the perspective that he could provide backup on the right wing.
