Tony Cascarino slams Liverpool’s midfield and urges key summer target to opt against Anfield switch

Tony Cascarino says Liverpool FC’s midfield lacks ambition

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes that the midfielders at Liverpool at the moment lack ambition and suggests transfer target Mason Mount go elsewhere. A part of his statement may be true, maybe false.

Writing in his exclusive column for The Times (subscription needed), he noted that he would fit Arsenal the best in case he decides to leave the Blues at the end of the season. Speaking of Liverpool FC’s interest in Mount, he said the Reds come in a close second to the Gunners in terms of adaptability mainly because we haven’t had an ambitious midfield recently.

Tough to agree with that Tony, the Reds just completed a domestic double last season, took the Premier League title race to the final day, and gave Real Madrid a tough fight in the 2022 UCL final. Speaks of ambition, if not nothing else.

Here is what he wrote in his exclusive column on the Mason Mount situation and Liverpool’s midfield via The Times:

“I’m not convinced Liverpool will be the best solution for him because Liverpool haven’t had an ambitious midfield recently.”

“They have enough up front, so they don’t have to risk another body from midfield, but they have lost three midfielders in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keïta, so Jürgen Klopp is looking for one. Liverpool is, without a doubt, a close second to Arsenal for Mount.”

Is Liverpool’s midfield unambitious?

However, speaking solely of this season, Cascarino seems spot on. Liverpool’s squad has been a shadow of their former selves this season, and much of it certainly has to do with the midfield situation. However, that is surely not enough reason for Mount to go elsewhere.

Even in our worst season under Jurgen Klopp, we are just falling short of Champions League spots and that speaks of the usual levels of the club.

As far as lacking ambition is concerned, a top professional like Mount would look at it as a challenge and want to bring change to the scenario. With 129 Premier League appearances for a top club like Chelsea, there is certainly no questioning his professionalism.

However, with interest from other Premier League clubs as well, Liverpool need to up the ante a bit to ensure that Mount doesn’t see certainty in the Reds’ rivals but finds a home in Merseyside and the club.

Hopefully, Liverpool’s midfielders next season do not lack ambition next season and beyond and bring much more silverware to the club. The next season is a totally new start for the club and most of the players who don’t know what the Europa League anthem sounds like, and fingers crossed, we take the next season by the scruff of its neck.
