“Didn’t quite get over the line”- James Milner recalls one trophy regret during his successful Liverpool spell

Outgoing vice-captain James Milner reflects on his time at Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has opened up about his decision to leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season.

The 37-year-old, known for his professionalism and versatility, sheds light on his reasons for his departure and addresses whether there exists anything more he hoped to achieve during his time as a Reds player.

The only trophy James Milner has not won at the Reds during his spell at the club is the Europa League. Liverpool came as close as possible though, but Sevilla got the better of Jurgen Klopp’s men in the German’s first major final with the Merseysiders.

In an interview with Liverpool ECHO, Milner candidly shares his thoughts and here is what he said on whether there was anything else he would have wished to win during his time at the club:

“Not really. It would have been nice to win the Europa League final against Sevilla in 2016. We didn’t quite get over the line. Other than that, no. That’s why I’m content on leaving this place, which isn’t easy. I think it’s probably very sad leaving here if you feel as if you’ve missed out or not achieved what you wanted.”

What next for Liverpool and Milner?

Milner’s time at Liverpool has been filled with memorable moments and collective success, including winning the Premier League, Champions League, and Club World Cup. However, the experienced midfielder harbors a lingering disappointment regarding the Europa League final defeat in 2016. Falling short on that occasion remains one of the few regrets in his distinguished career.

Despite this unfulfilled ambition, Milner expresses contentment with his time at Liverpool. Leaving a club of such stature is not an easy decision, but he believes he has accomplished a great deal during his tenure.

Milner’s professionalism and commitment have made him a highly respected figure both on and off the pitch, endearing him to Liverpool fans and earning him the nickname “Mr. Reliable.”

As Milner bids farewell to Liverpool, his departure evokes a sense of reflection and gratitude. He leaves with a strong sense of satisfaction, having contributed significantly to the team’s success over the years. Milner’s departure marks the end of an era, but his legacy as a dependable and dedicated player will remain a part of Liverpool’s history.
