As per the Guardian, Chelsea have joined Liverpool and Barcelona in the race to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga this summer.
The report reveals that Veiga’s contract has a buyout clause of £34.4m which can be triggered by any of the interested parties. The young Spaniard had an exceptional season for Celta and played a key part in them surviving the relegation.
Liverpool will consider moving for the 21-year-old once they complete the signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion. The Argentine is undergoing
medical and could sign the deal this week.Veiga, on the other hand, is a highly-skilled player who predominantly played in a midfield pivot for Celta this season. He got 11 goals and four assists in 36 league appearances, including a stunning brace against Barcelona on Sunday.
The 21-year-old is a strong box-to-box operator who is good at passing, creating chances, long-range shots and dribbling past people. Given his age, he will only get better.
If Liverpool need a right-sided central midfielder to form a partnership with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Veiga has the qualities to do that exceptionally well.
It remains to be seen where he prefers to go. Chelsea and Liverpool offer him a chance to play in arguably the most popular league in the world, but a move to Barcelona means he doesn’t have to leave La Liga and is already playing for one of the biggest sports teams in history.
For Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool though, they are interested in other midfielders too. Contacts have been made to potentially send offers to sign French duo Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone.
It is going to be a long summer for the Reds as they are expected to do a lot of business to perform a minor overhaul of the squad. So, no incoming or outgoing transfer can be accepted as a foregone conclusion. We may see a clearer picture by the end of this month.
