Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio turned down Liverpool move before heading to PSG
In a surprising twist of events, Liverpool’s pursuit of Marco Asensio has hit a roadblock, as the Spanish winger reportedly rejected a proposal from the Reds in favour of signing for Paris Saint-Germain. This development comes as a blow to Liverpool, who had hoped to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
After an impressive nine-year spell at Real Madrid, Asensio announced his departure from the Santiago Bernabeu last month. The news sparked interest from several top clubs, with Liverpool being among the frontrunners to secure his signature. However, a move did not materialise.
There have not been many players in the Jurgen Klopp era who would’ve rejected a move to the Reds, but Marco Asensio apparently has. According to AS via ECHO, the 27-year-old Spaniard, with three UEFA Champions League titles amongst a host of other trophies, had an offer from the Reds on the table but decided to move to the French capital instead.
This turn of events leaves Liverpool with the task of identifying alternative right-wing backup options for Mohamed Salah. While young talents like Ben Doak may be considered for a chance to impress, it is clear that Liverpool still requires an established player to fill the void left by Asensio’s rejection.
What next for the Reds?
Asensio’s decision to snub Liverpool highlights the fierce competition among Europe’s top clubs for marquee signings. PSG’s financial power and recent success domestically have certainly played a part in attracting the Spanish winger.
Even without Asensio’s services, the Reds’ attack is pretty much stacked and certainly capable of delivering on the big stage with the right kind of players around them. The likes of Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are extremely talented and have what it takes to be at the top of European football.
Despite this setback, Liverpool boasts a formidable team and has shown resilience in the face of adversity before. Manager Jurgen Klopp and his staff have a proven track record of nurturing young talents and maximizing the potential of their squad.
As the transfer window continues, Liverpool’s focus will now shift to securing suitable alternatives to bolster their squad depth. The club’s recruitment team with Jorg Schmadtke leading them is surely capable of bringing in names that could make an impact.
