“I really believe that”- Pundit backs Liverpool to challenge Manchester City for PL title despite recent form

Robbie Keane backs Liverpool title charge despite disappointing last season

Former Liverpool forward Robbie Keane has expressed confidence in his old side’s ability to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next season, despite their disappointing campaign this time around.

Liverpool finished the 2022/23 season in fifth place, missing out on Champions League qualification and settling for Europa League football. With Manchester City securing their fourth Premier League title in the last five seasons, Liverpool trailed the champions by a significant 22 points.

Throughout the season, the Reds suffered defeats against teams like Bournemouth, Leeds United, Brighton, and Wolves, contributing to their underwhelming position in the table.

However, Keane remains optimistic about the team’s prospects for the upcoming season. He believes Liverpool will be in contention to challenge Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning side and here is what he told Betway via ECHO on the Reds’ title charge for next season :

“It’s very difficult to say where Man City go from here, because if you win the treble, what players do you need? It depends on which players go out,”

“Next year, I don’t think it’s going to be a two-horse race with Arsenal. I think Liverpool will be back in the fold, I really believe that.”

Keano shows confidence in the Reds

Keane’s comments indicate that even though Manchester City is a formidable force, Liverpool has the potential to close the gap and mount a title challenge.

Despite Liverpool’s disappointing season, which saw them fail to secure a top-four finish, the club’s rich history and Jurgen Klopp

‘s managerial prowess cannot be discounted. Klopp has guided Liverpool to numerous successes in recent seasons. Keane’s confidence in Liverpool’s resurgence stems from their proven ability to bounce back from setbacks.

Liverpool’s absence from the Champions League means they will have fewer fixtures to contend with, allowing them to focus on domestic competitions and mount a sustained title challenge.

The disappointment of this season’s shortcomings may serve as motivation for the players to come back stronger and regain their winning form.

As the new season approaches, Liverpool will aim to bolster their squad during the transfer window, addressing the midfield in particular, which surely needs a lot of work in the summer.

While challenging a dominant Manchester City side will not be an easy task, Liverpool have done it before, and there is no reason to believe why Jurgen Klopp and Co. could not do it again ahead of a new season.
