West Ham chairman confirms Declan Rice departure amid Liverpool links
Amid much interest and speculation of a summer move, West Ham chairman David Sullivan confirms that skipper Declan Rice will leave the Hammers this summer with Liverpool among the clubs sniffing around the situation.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Declan Rice in recent months and the state of affairs of his contract at the London Stadium. The 24-year-old has grown in stature to become one of the best defensive midfielders in the league.
Even though from what it seems at the moment, the Reds are only an outsider to the situation as Rice could prove to become unaffordable for Liverpool. West Ham United have set a fee of £120m for their captain, and that is surely not something the Reds could splurge out without a second thought.
Here is what the chairman of West Ham had to say on Rice leaving the Hammers to talkSPORT via Liverpool ECHO:
“I think it has to be. We promised him he could go. He set his heart on going. You can’t ask for a man who has committed more to us this season. In due course, he has to get on and we have to get a replacement – or several replacements.”
What next for Rice?
While Liverpool’s interest in Rice remains well-documented, the club’s decision-makers could evaluate the feasibility of making a move, taking into account the considerable price tag attached to the midfielder. The Reds’ cautious approach in the transfer market has allowed Arsenal to take the lead in the race for Rice’s signature and rightly so.
Although Liverpool acknowledge Rice’s exceptional talent and his ability to bolster their midfield, they are carefully considering the financial implications of such a significant investment.
The club’s commitment to maintaining a sustainable transfer policy while ensuring long-term stability plays a pivotal role in their decision-making process as has been the case over the years.
Rice’s departure from West Ham marks the end of a remarkable journey for the young Englishman. Captaining the Hammers to European glory in the UEFA Conference League final was the perfect swansong for his time at the London club. His consistent performances and leadership qualities have undoubtedly caught the attention of several top clubs.
As Liverpool continues to explore their options in the transfer market, their pursuit of Rice remains an intriguing subplot even though at the moment, it seems nothing more than a far-stretch.
