Liverpool face domestic competition in the race to sign Federico Chiesa

Juventus remain open to selling left-winger Federico Chiesa and Liverpool are among the clubs who remain in discussion in the media as a possible destination for the Italian international.

However, things are not as easy as they sound. Newcastle United and Manchester United show interest in getting on board Federico Chiesa and that could form a roadblock in case the Reds’ interest in the player is genuine.

The newspaper Tuttosport, via Sport Witness (h/t ECHO) claims that both Uniteds show an interest in the player and hence, Liverpool will need to remain proactive if they wish to see Chiesa at Anfield next summer.

Jurgen Klopp apparently stands very intrigued by the player and could possibly want him at the club next summer. Chiesa primarily plays down the left wing and is capable of playing on the right flank as well.

Do Liverpool need Chiesa?

However, we have often seen under Klopp that the Reds have a tendency to play inverted wingers who prefer to cut back onto their favoured foot on the wing and create scoring opportunities. That is why right-footers like Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez play down the left, and similarly, we have Mohamed Salah on the right.

With that in mind, we must also remember that Diogo Jota is a more than useful option on the left. Cody Gakpo recently mentioned that he prefers playing through the centre and even he could remain utilised down the left, so we have a plethora of options when it comes to left-wingers.

There would have been absolutely no reason to jump at the situation and get Chiesa on board if the situation at Liverpool was so that there is a lack of players who could play down the left. Even though he can play second fiddle to Salah, he is too good of a player to remain second-choice.

Depth can never hurt a club, and nobody in the league would know that better than Liverpool. However, we could surely back the club to scout the players who could best fit the team, and sit in the budget as well.

Chiesa, in all honesty, could become too expensive of a buy, and even if not, the wage demands of the player would mean Liverpool will have to take the back seat on a number of fronts. Hence, it would be wise if the club could get on board another player, a pure right-winger to back Salah up. Or even better, give Ben Doak the opportunities he deserves after his performances with the age-group teams.
