Looking Back: The Most Resounding Liverpool Victories Last Season

Liverpool has one of those seasons behind it that started great but didn’t end as well as we’ve all expected. The Reds played 38 matches, won 19, scored 75 goals, and had 14 clean sheets across the season. They were just a few points shy of qualifying for the Champions League, and while it didn’t reach the desired Top 4, it will proceed to the Europa League group stage. And it has some of the most resounding victories of the season behind it. Let’s take a look at some of them today.

1-6 against Leeds (April 17)

It was just the second away win scored by Liverpool in 2023. For Leeds, it was a record home loss. For Liverpool, it was nowhere near a record away victory (that was a match against the Potters in 2000).

Leeds left its defences wide open, just like they did in their previous match against Crystal Palace. The Reds made good use of the gaps in their defence: Salah and Jota both scored twice in the game, with Gakpo and Nunez completing the score. It was a beautiful win, one to be proud of.

7-0 against Manchester United (March 5)

While it does have its share of issues, Manchester United is still considered a force to be reckoned with. Just look at its results last season: the Red Devils finished third, and are now preparing for the Champions League group stage. This makes it all the more enjoyable to remember how they were bashed right into the ground during their March visit to Anfield.

The match was a new record for the Reds: never before have they beaten United this badly. Gakpo, Nunez, and Salah all scored twice, with Firmino completing the score.

United didn’t lose by such a margin since 1931.

9-0 against Bournemouth (August 27)

But the most resounding victory for the Reds last season was, without a doubt, their 9-0 victory against Bournemouth. The team had a slow start to the season, with two draws and a loss behind them at the time. After the second place achieved last year, and the title a year before, many fans and bettors were certainly disappointed by their results. But it all changed when the Reds found their wings against the Cherries at Anfield last August. The patience of those who trusted them with their tickets paid off.

To be fair, one of the goals scored during the match was not scored by Liverpool – it was an own goal scored by Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham. But all the others were scored by Reds – and each of them was scored by a different player.

This was only the fourth time a team won in the Premier League by such a margin – United did it twice, and Leicester once in the past.

We have a most memorable – and very unpredictable – season behind us. The transfer season is underway, and soon, the new season begins. But we’ll always be proud of the record-breaking wins that Liverpool achieved last season, and that will certainly go down in the club’s – and the Premier League’s – history.
