Liverpool’s Diogo Jota emphasises squad refreshment for upcoming season

A major reason why Liverpool failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season comes down to squad depth and the lack of replenishment. The players at Liverpool have been at their jobs for a considerable period, and there have not been enough quality additions to the squad.

The Reds’ forward Diogo Jota spoke about the same and here is what he told FourFourTwo exclusively on the need to refresh the squad with new players in Liverpool’s pursuit of winning more trophies:

“You always need to refresh the squad with new players. That’s what we’ve done, and if we stick together for a long time, things will get better. In the season we’ve just had, we weren’t there – it’s the truth – but hopefully that was hitting the bottom and we can bounce back and try to fight for titles again.”

Over the past few years, even without a substantial number of incomings into the squad, Liverpool have consistently put up a strong show, both domestically and in Europe. This last season, however, the effects of a wearing down squad were on show as the Reds failed to qualify for the UCL.

Personally for Jota as well, the next season will hold a lot of significance as a major part of his campaign last time around stood overshadowed due to a knee injury and he saw himself sidelined for most parts of it.

Even with injury troubles, Jota managed to score seven goals towards the end of the campaign after his return from the layoff and also got eight assists as well in a total of 28 appearances across all competitions.

Jota isn’t the first player calling for more signings, although he did it indirectly. Ibrahima Konate spoke about squad rejuvenation at Liverpool a few days ago, and hopefully, the club does enough business for the Reds to sustain themselves for long into the future.

The Reds have already started their summer transfer business as they got on board Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion a few weeks ago and hopefully, he contributes to the best of his abilities.

A number of players at the moment are linked with a move to Liverpool, and hopefully, we add to our squad before the conclusion of the transfer window.

Because the Reds have not added to their squad in enough numbers, it is important that Liverpool do so this season so that it does not end up being too late for the Merseysiders.
