“It feels natural”- Liverpool ace provides positive appraisal following major tactical shakeup

According to the BBC, Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has opened up on a positive note regarding his new role further upfield.

The Reds ace has largely made a name for himself as one of the best attacking right-backs in world football. He played a key role in the position as Jurgen Klopp’s men conquered the Premier League, European and world football scenes in recent years.

The time now appears to be ripe for the 24-year-old to enjoy a tactical shift. Trent impressed in the midfield towards the end of the previous season and could be set to reprise the role again next season.

Trent sported the number 10 jersey for the first time at the senior level last night against Malta. He impressed on the night and was a constant menace for the European minnows.

While the number might have been new, he had served the same role upfield in 2021 against Andorra. The Liverpool ace has grown leaps and bounds since then and it was evident on the night as he put in a mature and difference-making performance.

The 24-year-old played a key role in England’s opening goal before doubling it with a strike that Steven Gerrard would have been proud of. Trent is rightfully impressed with his own performance and believes it is a role he would like to revisit in the future.

“It feels natural, I will say that. It’s somewhere I can see myself playing.”

It remains to be seen if Klopp is willing to play Trent in a similar role. While the 24-year-old has served as an inverted full-back, roaming into central areas, he has not really been deployed as an out and out midfielder at club level.

Donning the same shoes for the Reds will be a difficult task given the expectations that come with it. That is not to mention, there will be harder opponents than Andorra to face. Trent admits it is a new challenge but appears to be willing to take a shot at it.

“I think the role I’ve been playing with club football, it’s a new avenue. It’s still early doors, it’s only one match, but it’s important that when I get the opportunity, I take it.”

Having sent Calvin Ramsey on loan to Preston North End, Trent remains our lone senior right-back on the roster. Unless we sign a replacement or change our formation, it is very difficult to see the Englishman be deployed as a midfielder permanently. It is a shame given that he is much better going forward and would certainly add dynamism to a role that needs reinventing at Anfield.
