Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk opens up about his future at the club
Surprisingly enough, Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk took time to talk about his future at the club. Even though his comments are just a signal of assurance, it rather seems unwanted as nobody questions his place in the Reds’ squad.
Speaking to the press about his contract situation, here is what Virgil told ECHO about the same:
“I still have two years left on my contract and I assume that they (Liverpool) still consider me important for the team. If not, I am sure I would have heard about it.”
The 31-year-old Dutchman has two more years left on his deal at Liverpool (Transfermarkt) and it is tough to see him leave the club prematurely, before the end of his contract at the Reds. He is among the core players in the team, and there would surely be a massive void in case Liverpool somehow decide to lay him off.
Even though after his ACL injury, Virgil has not displayed the same levels of performance, he still continues to be an extremely important part of Jurgen Klopp’s side and is a very integral part of the club’s leadership group as well.
Big Virg
Last season alone, he made 41 appearances across all competitions scoring three goals and also getting an assist on the way as well. People at Liverpool appreciate the greatness that is Virgil van Dijk, and it would be utter stupidity to let him leave the club before his contract ends.
There surely is more than just a season or two of the top-flight left in the former Southampton man and hopefully, the hierarchy at the club ensures that he continues to contribute to the club on all possible fronts.
Given that he is in his 30s, it would surely be wise of Liverpool to keep their options open and bring in some squad players who could learn from the likes of Virgil, Joel Matip, and Ibrahima Konate among others.
A number of centre-backs see themselves linked with the club, and there remains absolutely no doubt that all of them would love to learn from the best in business.

In any case, Virgil will remain a very important part of the club for next season as Liverpool would hope to compete on all fronts and challenge for all trophies possible. A player like him can play for any team in the world and make them better.
We should be glad he continues to stick with us despite our failure to accomplish big things in recent seasons.
