Manchester United hold phone calls with Liverpool target Nicolo Barella
In a disappointing turn of events for Liverpool fans, it appears that Nicolo Barella could head to Old Trafford to join Manchester United. The news comes as a blow to Liverpool, who certainly showed a lot of interest in acquiring the services of the highly-rated Italian international.
With recent reports suggesting a possible move to Newcastle United as well, it seemed that Barella’s future was up in the air. However, it now appears that Liverpool’s hopes of securing the midfielder stand dashed. According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via The Mirror, Manchester United ‘hold interesting phone calls’ with Nicolo Barella.
The prospect of Barella joining an already formidable Manchester United squad is undoubtedly a cause for concern for Liverpool supporters. Losing a big name to a direct-rvial makes it worse.
In recent days, Liverpool had emerged as one of the clubs linked with a move for Nicolo Barella. Jurgen Klopp, known for his astute transfer dealings, recognised the Italian’s immense talent and the potential impact he could have had on the team.
No Barella for the Reds?
With Liverpool looking to strengthen their midfield following the departure of a number of midfielders, Barella’s energetic playing style and technical abilities surely seemed like an ideal fit for Klopp’s system.
Adding to the intrigue surrounding Barella’s future, Newcastle United had also been linked with a potential transfer for the Inter Milan midfielder. The newly-rich Magpies were keen to make a statement signing and saw Barella as a player who could elevate their ambitions.
However, with Manchester United now in the picture, it appears that Newcastle’s chances of landing the Italian international have dwindled significantly.
As Manchester United continue their pursuit of Nicolo Barella, Liverpool finds themselves on the outside looking in. The disappointment of potentially missing out on the midfielder will undoubtedly be felt by the Anfield faithful.
