Liverpool have been informed about Edmond Tapsoba as Newcastle United among clubs eye his transfer
As per 90min (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool and Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.
Apart from the Reds and Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are also eyeing a move for the player and monitoring his progress at Leverkusen.
The 24-year-old joined the Bundesliga club back in January 2020 from Portuguese side Guimaraes. He is an elegant right-footed centre-back.
Tapsoba’s current contract with Leverkusen lasts until the summer of 2026. He made 47 appearances in all competitions in the 2022/23 season, scoring and assisting two goals (Transfermarkt).
The Burkina Faso international reads the game well defensively, is physically and aerially decent and has good pace to track the runners in defensive transitions.
We know that although Liverpool are focusing on buying midfielders this summer, adding a defender or two is equally important having seen the drop-off from some of the players in that department last season.
If we are being honest, the likes of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip did not fill us with any confidence with sketchy performances. Relying on them next season might be risky.
With the new system where Trent Alexander-Arnold plays the hybrid role, it would be important for the club to sign a right-sided centre-back to support Ibrahima Konate if and when required.
For that reason, in addition to seeing Tapsoba’s attributes and profile as a player, it won’t be a bad idea for Liverpool to make a move for the 24-year-old in the current transfer window.
