Young Mainz striker Nelson Weiper is eyed by Liverpool

As per German outlet Bild, via Sports Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are eyeing a move for young Mainz and German centre-forward Nelson Weiper this summer.

The report reveals that the Reds have been looking to sign Weiper for over two years now, having admired his game.

The 18-year-old is a Mainz youth product who made his senior debut for them during the 2022/23 season. He made nine Bundesliga appearances off the bench, scoring two goals (Transfermarkt).

For various youth and B teams of Mainz, Weiper has scored 41 goals and assisted five in 39 appearances in all competitions. Those are some returns from the youngster.

The German youth international is a physically and aerially strong striker who can score goals and link up the play very well.

One can understand why Liverpool are interested in him, given he is still very young and can be a great addition to the Reds’ youth sides before potentially making a mark in the senior team.

It remains to be seen how much Mainz would demand for a player who has now made his senior debut there. The price might have gone up knowing he has two goals in the Bundesliga from 91 minutes of football.

If the transfer fee does not hinder Liverpool’s business in the summer window regarding other key additions to the squad, they can sign Weiper and hope that he develops into a top number nine here.

This signing could also be made for business purposes. The Reds can sign the 18-year-old for a potentially low-ish fee, develop him here and sell him for profit in a couple of years’ time. The other part of it is that he develops well here and becomes a member of the senior squad in the coming years.
