Liverpool show interest in Atletico midfielder Marcos Llorente

Liverpool and Manchester United are both keeping a close eye on Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente.

That is according to Fichajes via liverpool.com who claim that the Spaniard could cost £51m and thereabouts. Liverpool fans would not have any fond memories of Llorente. He was responsible for knocking the Reds out of the 2020 UCL, after scoring two extra-time goals.

While Liverpool may still be considering bolstering their midfield options, Llorente’s age could be a stumbling block. At 28 years old, he doesn’t quite align with Liverpool’s usual transfer strategy of targeting younger players with room for development. However, there could be an alternative role for Llorente at Anfield.

Interestingly, Llorente has demonstrated his versatility by excelling in the right-back position in the past. This adaptability could be appealing to Liverpool, as it would provide much-needed cover for our own right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

With Trent being deployed in a hybrid role that allows him to contribute both defensively and offensively, having Llorente as a backup could be valuable.

Nevertheless, Liverpool would have to carefully evaluate whether investing a significant amount of money in a player who may be entering the latter stages of his career is a wise decision.

While Llorente has proven himself at the highest level, his peak years may be behind him. Liverpool’s recruitment team and coaching staff will need to weigh the potential benefits against the long-term implications.

He is a very versatile player, though, and can fulfil the James Milner role of being able to slot it wherever, whenever for Klopp. Llorente can play anywhere in midfield, as a full-back and has even played as an attacker for Los Colchoneros.

Ultimately, the decision to pursue Llorente will depend on Liverpool’s evaluation of their current squad depth and their assessment of his ability to contribute effectively in both midfield and defensive roles.
