Hamann urges Liverpool to ‘hijack’ Chelsea’s deal for 21-year-old star

Liverpool urged to sign Chelsea target and Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo

Former Liverpool Didi Hamann has urged the club to sign 21-year-old Chelsea target and Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo in this transfer window.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Ecuador international for some time now. However, their latest bid to sign him has been rejected by Brighton. The west London giants made an offer of around £70m.

While until a few days ago it felt as if Liverpool have covered most of the bases in the midfield by signing Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, the transfer market has taken a rapid turn.

We can now expect Fabinho to leave the club and sign for Saudi side Al-Ittihad, while negotiations are ongoing between the Reds and Al-Ettifaq for captain Jordan Henderson.

Here’s what Hamann said on Liverpool needing to sign Caicedo (h/t Lord Ping, via Liverpool Echo):

“Liverpool need another midfielder if Jordan Henderson and Fabinho do decide to leave for what they’re being offered in Saudi Arabia. Moises Caicedo is a brilliant player, he fits the profile of a ‘ball-winner’, what Fabinho has been doing for Liverpool for years.

“If there is an opportunity to hijack the deal from Chelsea, then I think Liverpool should go for Caicedo. He would be another great signing for Liverpool’s midfield, alongside Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.”

Regardless of what happens with the latter, the departure of Fabinho has sparked the club to action to sign a more experienced defensive midfielder.

Although it may not be easy to lure Caicedo, his future is still up in the air. Some of the things the 21-year-old guarantees are experience in the Premier League, high quality on and off the ball and a perfect profile to play the number six role under Jurgen Klopp.

With Chelsea struggling to match Brighton’s demands, can the Reds make a back-door entry and steal the march on the Blues to sign the midfielder? It isn’t impossible.

The relationship between the Seagulls and Liverpool must be in good stead following Mac Allister’s arrival at Anfield and James Milner’s departure to the Amex this summer.

A lot can still happen in the transfer window. Let’s hope that the club has cunning plans in place to find a suitable defensive midfielder who can start from day one. There might be no time for him to settle down and wait for the perfect moment to start firing.
