Fabrizio Romano reveals the latest in negotiations between Liverpool and Al-Ettifaq for Jordan Henderson

As per a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, negotiations are still ongoing between Liverpool and Saudi Arabia club Al-Ettifaq for the Reds captain Jordan Henderson.

A few days ago, the Guardian revealed that Henderson has agreed on a contract with Al-Ettifaq. So, it is clear that the player is ready to move to the middle east. But, a transfer fee needs to be agreed upon.

Romano updates that there is no chance this transfer will be done for free as earlier requested by the Saudi club. Talks are going to find a suitable solution for all parties. With the England international still having two years of contract at Anfield (Transfermarkt), Liverpool are in a position to demand a transfer fee for his departure.

Here’s what Romano tweeted:

“Al Ettifaq and Liverpool are still discussing about fee for Jordan Henderson deal. Negotiations ongoing.

“No chance for free transfer as initially requested by Al Ettifaq. But talks are now ongoing in order to find compromise between all the parties.”

Regardless of what the fee would be, it might not be a bad thing for the Reds to lose Henderson this summer. His football has been on a decline for the last 18 months. Once that happens, the leadership effect can cool down too. In football, it is always better to lead the team by playing well.

With the Englishman still having two years of contract here, it must be slightly easier for the club to demand a transfer fee for his departure. Once it gets to 2024 or 2025, it becomes to garner much money for an ageing and underperforming player.

With Fabinho set to leave as well, Liverpool must dip in the market to sign two more midfielders. There is a list of midfielders reported by a number of journalists. We won’t be surprised if the Reds make moves for the ones that are not named in the newspapers.

This summer has given us that example already. Not many revealed about the club’s interest in Dominik Szoboszlai before they signed him.
