Liverpool and Newcastle United now have Manchester City as their competitor for Nicolo Barella
As per Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb (h/t Liverpool Echo), treble winners Manchester City have joined Liverpool and Newcastle United in the race to sign Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.
The report reveals that City had a good look at the player when they played Inter in the Champions League. With Ilkay Gundogan gone and Bernardo Silva’s future in doubt, they are potentially aiming to sign him.
Earlier in the window, Liverpool and Newcastle had been linked with the player. After signing Dominik Szoboszlai, those wide-of-the-mark links have quietened down at Anfield.
But, with the imminent departure of Fabinho to Al-Ittihad and Jordan Henderson to Al-Ettifaq on the cards, there might be a few newspapers running the news of the Reds looking to sign Barella this summer.
Let’s just that it is highly unlikely that Liverpool will sign the Italian international. A few days ago, it was revealed that he would cost €80m. That is enough to conclude the aforementioned sentence.
If that is the going rate for the 26-year-old and City are desperate to get him, we won’t be surprised if they open their chequebook and sign him. They obviously do not have any issues spending big on multiple players in one transfer window.
For Liverpool, it is about finding two defensive-minded midfielders to come in and replace Fabinho and Henderson. One of the two must be a readymade replacement who can come in and start games straight away.

It won’t be easy to do that in such a competitive market with new buyers in the town – clubs from Saudi Arabia. But, just as how they were smart in signing Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, we can expect similar magic in the coming days too.
