Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai talks about his ideal position to play in
Dominik Szoboszlai played a number of positions in the 45 minutes he featured against Karlsruher for Liverpool in the pre-season friendly at the BBBank Wildpark. The Hungary international started out on the left side of a midfield three alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bobby Clark and transitioned onto the right as the game went on.
The 22-year-old spoke to a group of journalists after the game, and speaking of what his ideal position is to play in, here is what Szobo had to say via Liverpool ECHO:
“I want to be on the pitch! But yeah, number eight, number 10, if I have to slide back a little bit to take the ball as a number six, no problem, but I want to be more towards the goal. But yeah, box-to-box I would say.”
While it is great to see the player display so much confidence, from the looks of it, he seems like a player who could make any side of a midfield three his own. We will surely get to know more about what Klopp expects from the side going ahead when he starts Mac Allister and Szoboszlai together as both seem like the players who would play on the left side of a midfield pivot.
It is great to see Liverpool lift some weight off the shoulders of our full-backs for creativity. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have always been at the core of our attacking and with players like Dom and Macca, they can surely take a sense of calm and go about their game with more freedom.
What’s best for Szobo?
With him saying that he prefers a B2B role, match situations would probably see him fit into those kinds of roles depending on what the team could do best at the moment. Until then, the motive of pre-season fixtures shall continue. Experimentation has no boundaries.
As a box-to-box midfielder, Szoboszlai can contribute both offensively and defensively, making him a well-rounded presence on the pitch. However, from his time at RBL, one thing that is clear is his ability as a pure attacking midfielder. While he can stick in a tackle better than most, his best use would be as a midfielder with the freedom to attack.
The young midfielder’s journey at Liverpool has just begun, and with the support of the fans and the guidance of Klopp, Szoboszlai has the potential to become a key player for the Reds.

As he continues to develop and adapt to the rigours of English football, Liverpool’s midfield is set to gain a valuable asset. One can imagine Klopp will make the most of the Hungarian’s versatility and he can also play him on the flanks at times.
But it would bode well for the player and for us if we play him in the position he wants to.
