McManaman says he will be ‘surprised’ if Chelsea starlet joins Liverpool

Steve McManaman talks about Liverpool FC’s pursuit of Levi Colwill

Liverpool’s pursuit of young defender Levi Colwill has been met with scepticism from former Red Steve McManaman.

Speaking to Betfred via ECHO, McManaman expressed doubt that Chelsea would be willing to part ways with the promising English centre-back.

“I don’t believe Chelsea will, or need to, sell Levi. The plan at Chelsea is to keep the younger players for the future and he did really well for Brighton last season and for England’s under-21s this summer.”

“You can understand why there’s interest in him, but it would be very interesting to see if Chelsea would be prepared to let a young, English centre-back go to a fellow Premier League rival, especially when he’s got a long-term contract and a lot of promise. I’d be very surprised if they let him go to Liverpool.”

According to Macca, Chelsea’s strategy involves keeping their talented young players for the future, and he believes that Colwill‘s impressive performances for Brighton last season on loan and England’s under-21 squad this summer make him a valuable asset in their plans.

The 20-year-old defender’s loan spell at Brighton showcased his potential and ability as a centre-back, and it’s no surprise that Liverpool has shown interest in acquiring his services.

However, McManaman points out that Chelsea’s long-term vision and faith in their young talents may make it difficult for Liverpool to secure Colwill’s transfer.

The former Liverpool player highlights the potential reluctance of Chelsea to strengthen a fellow Premier League rival by letting a young, Englishman move to Liverpool. Furthermore, Colwill’s long-term contract until 2025 (Transfermarkt

Steve McManaman says Chelsea would not want to sell a talent like Levi Colwill to Liverpool.

While Liverpool may see Colwill as a valuable addition to their squad, Chelsea’s stance suggests that they sit determined to hold on to him. This situation is a testament to the growing competition among Premier League clubs for talented young players with great promise.

McManaman’s doubts over Colwill’s potential move to Liverpool come amidst the Reds’ search for defensive reinforcements. Liverpool remain keen on bolstering their defensive options, especially given the age of their current options at centre-back. For now, only time will tell how the Colwill situation unfolds.

Having said that, Colwill’s high ceiling make him an attractive prospect for the Reds and Liverpool should surely try their best to bring the player to Anfield. But that depends on Chelsea’s stance on the player. The ball is in their court.
