Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk talks about Trent Alexander-Arnold excelling in new role
Virgil van Dijk, the newly appointed captain of Liverpool, believes that entrusting Trent Alexander-Arnold with the role of vice-captain will help the young star reach new heights in his career.
With Jordan Henderson’s departure from the club, it has been officially confirmed that Virgil will lead the Reds as their skipper. Trent will take on the role of his deputy. Expressing his joy at the news, Van Dijk spoke about Alexander-Arnold’s progress and his potential for further growth. Here is what Virg told the club’s official website:
“I think he’s in a phase now where he has to make that transition of becoming a big leader for the football club. I think he will make those steps. And with the help obviously of myself and the others, Robbo, Ali, Mo, obviously the manager, he can make the next step.”
“I think to give that responsibility to him could definitely even more benefit him as well. So it’s a very good choice. Obviously the others as well, they are as important and we all have to make sure that we take the responsibility.”
Van Dijk is confident that with the support of other senior players like himself, Andy Robertson, Alisson, and Mohamed Salah coupled with the guidance of the manager, Alexander-Arnold will undoubtedly make the next big leap in his development.
Granting this responsibility to Alexander-Arnold could prove to be a turning point in his career. The added leadership role might help him flourish even more, both on and off the pitch. Taking on this responsibility will further benefit Alexander-Arnold’s growth as a player and a leader within the squad.
TAA’s stock keeps rising
While Alexander-Arnold’s vice-captaincy is a significant moment, the collective responsibility falls on all players in the team. Each individual, including the new captain, must ensure that they contribute to the team’s success and unity. However, to add a special touch to it, Trent’s journey from the club’s academy towards the armband at the senior team is very similar to that of his idol, Steven Gerrard.
This appointment for Trent opens a new chapter in his career, providing him with an excellent opportunity to showcase his leadership qualities and contribute significantly to Liverpool’s ambitions. He is truly on the path of Gerrard, and hopefully, he goes on to etch his name not only in Liverpool folklore but in football history like Stevie.
The combination of Van Dijk’s experience and mentorship, alongside the talents and determination of Alexander-Arnold, bodes well for Liverpool’s future.
