Chelsea have offered long-term contract to Liverpool target Levi Colwill
In what is a significant blow to their pursuit of Levi Colwill, Liverpool learn that Chelsea have apparently offered a new long-term contract to the 20-year-old centre-back.
Colwill, who spent the entirety of last season on loan at Brighton showed his exceptional abilities at The Amex, thereby attracting interest from Liverpool. The Reds, in fairness, could do with defensive reinforcements with growing concerns over the form and availability of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Colwill’s situation via his Twitter (X) account.
“Negotiations are taking place in these hours for Levi Colwill’s new contract — Chelsea have improved their proposal and want to make it happen. Talks will continue, Chelsea confident. They always described Levi Colwill as ‘untouchable’. Not for sale.”
David Ornstein has since stated that Colwill is set to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge that will extend his stay at the club until at least the summer of 2029. That’s it then. Liverpool can forget about the Englishman for now.
The potential signing of Colwill has certainly been a topic of interest for Liverpool, who have had their eye on the promising defender. However, it appears that Chelsea have taken the necessary step needed to keep him happy at the club for a long time.
This move of ‘readying contract talks’ signifies Chelsea’s commitment to nurturing their own talents and keeping them within their ranks. As negotiations progress between Colwill and Chelsea, Liverpool may possibly face disappointment in their pursuit of the defender.
No Colwill for the Reds
Despite the Reds’ interest, it seems that Colwill’s future remains tied to the London club. Chelsea’s willingness to improve their initial contract proposal indicates their belief in the player’s potential and their desire to secure his services for the long term. While Colwill is a boyhood Liverpool fan, it seems that the Merseysiders probably have to do without his services.
Colwill’s abilities could have surely proved to be a valuable addition to the squad, but Chelsea’s efforts to retain him have put a potential transfer on hold for now. The Anfield faithful will have to wait and see if a move can materialise down the line… a few years from now, maybe.
As this situation progresses, Liverpool’s focus should shift to other defensive targets to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season and beyond. It was always likely that Colwill would be hard to sign, especially after Wesley Fofana’s ACL injury.

In the world of football transfers, developments can change rapidly and we must be ready to find the next great deal in the market if and when it pops up. There is a need to strengthen the backline with Virgil van Dijk (32) and Joel Matip (31) in their 30s while Joe Gomez has failed to convince with his displays in recent months.
