Liverpool make contact with Fluminense to explore a deal for Andre

As per a tweet from Sky Sports journalist Melissa Reddy, Liverpool make initial contact with Brazilian club Fluminense over the possibility of signing midfielder Andre.

This comes after the update that the Reds have seen their second bid worth £41m for Romeo Lavia rejected by Southampton. Andre is seen as one of the alternatives if the Saints do not budge with their asking price of £50m for Lavia.

Sky Sports have revealed that Fluminense are not interested in selling Andre this summer. They would rather do that at the end of this calendar year with a price tag of £20m mooted.

Here’s what Reddy tweeted:

“Liverpool have officially made contact with Fluminense over the possibility of signing midfielder Andre.”

It seems like Liverpool won’t meet the asking price for Lavia and would wait for Southampton to adjust in the negotiations. That is a dangerous game to play unless the club is confident that the player would push for a move eventually.

Coming back to Andre, he is a talented 22-year-old midfielder who can operate either as a central midfielder or a defensive midfielder. He was a youth player at Fluminense before making a senior debut for them two years ago. He also made his Brazil debut during a friendly against Senegal in June.

The Brazilian is strong in passing, tackling and making defensive interceptions. He can do a bit better in aerial duels, which is an important aspect for a defensive midfielder, especially when he is linked with a move to the Premier League.

In the current Serie A season in Brazil, Andre has averaged a passing accuracy of 93.7%, completed 2.1 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game. Aerials won is 0.3 while contesting 0.6 per game (Whoscored).

With no experience of English or European football, it might be a risk to sign him and expect him to fill the gaping hole in defensive midfield. The better idea would be to buy and then loan him for a year to a club in this continent.
