Al-Ettifaq boss and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard does not want to sign Mohamed Salah yet

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is currently an Al-Ettifaq manager, reveals why the Saudi Arabia club won’t look to sign Mohamed Salah any time soon.

A couple of days ago, Salah’s agent nipped the Egyptian star’s rumoured move to Saudi in the bud this summer. The player signed a bumper new contract with the club 12 months ago.

The 31-year-old’s form during the pre-season was exceptional (two goals and seven assists in five games), carrying on from another incredible season last time around despite playing in a team that struggled big time.

Here’s what Gerrard said when asked about potentially making a move for Salah (h/t Sport Bible, quoted by Daily Mail):

“No. The answer is no. Mohamed Salah is my favourite player. I love Liverpool Football Club, so Mohamed can stay where he is.

“[He can join] when he wins more leagues and Champions Leagues with Liverpool, we’ll maybe consider it.”

Nice of Stevie to do us a bit of favour because the Saudi government could have sanctioned this deal with a bottomless money offer to the player. The Arab connection could have been too strong for it to not happen.

But, despite the player’s insistence to stay and win more trophies for Liverpool is great, it is good to know that the manager of the club interested in signing him is not bothered about this move any time soon.

Although the Reds have got a lot of exciting options in the forward line, Salah remains the focal point for teams to work on how to stop him. Playing for a mediocre team last season, the Egyptian got 30 goals and 16 assists in all competitions. He is not just a goal scorer anymore. There is a lot of creativity added to his game in the last 18 months or so.

So, in a season where we would need to potentially outscore opponents to win games because of a dodgy defence, having Salah and his class would be vital if we are to breach the 80-point mark in the league and get even close to the top two.
