Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai talks about his on-field responsibility
Following the recent departures of Jordan Henderson and James Milner, Liverpool find themselves in a spot as very few could lead the team like those two. However, in Virgil van Dijk, we have a competent leader who can lead the squad. Adding to the potential leaders in Liverpool, our new #8 Dominik Szoboszlai is open to that opportunity.
At merely 22 years of age, Szoboszlai is the captain of Hungary and is capable of leading squads. While he is yet to lead a side at the club level, his potential and prior leadership experience surely means that he could captain the side. While that day might not come in the immediate future, it is good to note that a player is as open as he is to the opportunity of leading a Liverpool team. Here is what he told the club’s official website:
“The coach knows they are a leader and that’s why Virg got the captaincy and Trent got the vice-captaincy. They are ready for it,”
“Trent is 24 but [has] a lot of experience in the Premier League, won everything with this club, born in Liverpool. It’s also a proud moment for both of them.”
“I’m a guy in the midfield who wants to help them.”
“I work for the team, I do everything and if I have to talk, I talk. With talks you can help the guys, and for me it’s most important to help others. I can take decisions that are not easy, but for me the team is in front of everything.”
In the current midfield setup, we have a lot of youngsters and just one player who “has been around for a long time” in a sense. Thiago Alcantara continues to be a source of inspiration for our midfield. Coming back to it, Szobo’s comments about working for the team are precisely what a manager looks for in a player.
While immediate captaincy may not be on the horizon, Szoboszlai’s open-mindedness to the prospect speaks volumes about his dedication to the team’s success. Apart from the captain and vice-captain, the leadership group at Liverpool consists of Alisson, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson.
A future captain?
Szoboszlai’s outlook on leadership reflects a mature understanding of the dynamics at play. For a player of his age, the understanding of the situation is a reflection of the player’s maturity and that is certainly going to help Liverpool.
While it is not so crucial for each department of the squad to have a leader, having so will surely prove to be extremely beneficial for the Reds in the long run.
As he contemplates his role within the team, Szoboszlai emphasizes his commitment to the midfield’s pivotal role in supporting his teammates. His description of himself as a midfield presence focused on helping others is what the club stands for, YNWA.
