Manchester United and Liverpool linked with a move for 27-year-old defender

Manchester United interested in signing Liverpool target Benjamin Pavard

In what could prove to be a major jolt to Liverpool FC’s transfer plans [if there were any], our rivals in Manchester United show interest in signing Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard, who also finds himself on our radar.

United eye a move for Pavard to replace the potential outgoing Harry Maguire, for whom Erik ten Hag’s side have an agreement in principle with West Ham United. Not until very long ago, Liverpool were among the clubs pursuing a deal for Pavard. His versatility to play either centre-back or right-back could have been extremely beneficial for the Reds.

However, as things stand, Manchester United are working on a verbal agreement with Pavard. That is according to Sky Germany who claim the Red Devils are trying to sign the wantaway Bayern Munich defender.

Pavard wants a move away from Munich, and his contract at the Bavarian giants lasts until 2027 (Transfermarkt). While his links with Liverpool have not materialised yet, it is rather high time that we do something about the gaps in our system.

Pavard to the North-West?

While we scored plenty of goals across our pre-season campaign, we also conceded a fair amount, and that is a reflection of our poor depth in defence. Having said that, the priority still remains to get on board midfielders. However, if there’s a window wherein we could get a good deal for Pavard, there is absolutely no reason why we should not explore that opportunity.

United’s interest though, creates a cause of concern for Liverpool. They have greater financial power, they can match Bayern’s ask and beyond and also potentially offer better wages than us. Before they can ease themselves in the competition to get Pavard’s signature, Liverpool must try and convince him to join the Reds instead.

That is if the interest is concrete. The 27-year-old is currently playing for a European behemoth that virtually guarantees a trophy each season. He has, however, hinted at being disappointed in the past because he doesn’t get to play as a centre-back as often as he would like with them.

It does make sense that we pursue him. Our focus should be on signing central midfielders but if that is sorted out, there is no harm in adding a world-class centre-back to our team. We can arguably offer him a starting role at CB over Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag fixated on the Raphael Varane-Lisandro Martinez partnership.
