“We don’t have to sell him”- Borussia Monchengladbach manager makes admission on Liverpool target Manu Kone’s future

Liverpool are warned that only an immense offer will convince Borussia Monchengladbach to sell Manu Kone

Borussia Monchengladbach manager Roland Virkus has made it clear that only an immense offer from Liverpool would convince them to sell Manu Kone.

Earlier in the summer window, Liverpool were distinctly linked with a move for the French U21 international. Since then, we have seen the Reds sign the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo to bolster the midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister.

Liverpool correspondent David Lynch has revealed that a move for the 22-year-old hasn’t been ruled out before the deadline of this transfer window.

Here’s what Virkus said when asked about the future of Kone amid links with a move to Anfield (h/t Bild, via Liverpool Echo):

“We don’t have to sell him. But it was always like this: if there is another immense offer, then we have to think about it. But that’s not the plan. Our plan is to keep Kone.”

These are pretty standard quotes from the manager of a club that could entertain a good offer from Liverpool. It is up to the Reds now, whether they want to make a move or not.

Kone is back fit after picking up a knee injury during the U21 Euros. His injury record in the last two seasons doesn’t exhibit confidence.

If we look at the numbers, the 22-year-old has missed 15 games for club and country since the start of the 2021/22 season. Is that just a coincidence or a sign of things to come? Well, we have seen how Naby Keita faired at the club during his five-year spell.

Barring that concern, if it is any, Kone is an excellent young midfielder who can play the number six role. He is very good on the ball and reads the game well off it.

Although Liverpool have signed Endo and welcomed Stefan Bajcetic into the matchday squad against Bournemouth, they could do with another body there. Kone, at 22, seems like an ideal addition if other targets are becoming hard to sign.
