Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is yet to return to team training following an ankle knock

As per a tweet from Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst, Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is yet to return to team training after picking up an ankle knock last week.

The England U21 international rolled his ankle during a training session and missed the game against Bournemouth as a result. At the time, it was envisaged that he would be back in training this week and be available for an away game against Newcastle United.

Although it is still Tuesday and the match is five days away, it would have been nice had the 22-year-old started training and accumulated rhythm ahead of an important game in the northeast.

The tweet from Gorst had a piece of good news that Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold were involved in the training. Both players had to come off late on against Bournemouth after suffering knocks. The latter seemed to have run out of energy and the latter got a kick on his ankle.

With these two back and Alexis Mac Allister’s red card overturned, Jurgen Klopp would be happy to have the majority of the squad available for Sunday.

By that time, Wataru Endo would have hopefully trained with the squad and got accustomed to the system.

We might see the Japanese international make his full Liverpool debut against Newcastle as the defensive midfielder. It would allow Mac Allister to play in his natural number eight role.

Coming back to Jones, it is such a shame that he is starting to pick up these niggles in a season which is so important for his development as a Liverpool player.

The 22-year-old has to grab his chances in the next few months or risk getting phased out in due course. Mac Allister’s red card suspension being overturned means at least the Reds won’t be caught out against the Magpies in midfield and will be able to field a strong lineup in the middle of the park.
