Liverpool are in talks with Bayern Munich to sign Ryan Gravenberch

As per an exclusive from David Ornstein for The Athletic (subscription required), Liverpool have begun negotiations with Bayern Munich to sign Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Although the player has been on the Reds’ radar for some time, the development has been rapid on this file since the start of the day.

While there is no guarantee of a move to take place, Liverpool would send a formal offer to the German champions if they feel the valuation is right.

The key thing in the report is that the midfielder prefers a move to Anfield rather than Manchester United, a club that has kept an eye on him this summer as well.

Gravenberch, who signed for Bayern last summer from Ajax, wants to leave the German champions because of the lack of game time there. Last season, the 21-year-old played a total of 937 minutes.

The Ajax youth product is a multi-functional midfield player who can play as an eight, as a 10 or in a double pivot midfield. He has played as a lone six in the past as well.

It was only a few days ago James Pearce reported that Liverpool are not looking to buy an out-and-out number six after the arrival of Wataru Endo. Instead, they would want someone who can operate in multiple positions.

Gravenberch offers that flexibility with great quality. Ignoring an unfortunate season at Bayern, he was excellent for the Ajax senior team.

The Dutchman is great on the ball, has the physique for winning aerial and ground duels and can score or assist goals from midfield when required.

Although we should not be counting chickens when it comes to Liverpool transfers this summer, let’s hope this deal is done in the next day or so. The deadline is on Friday night. So, it’s not like the club has much time to deliberate.
