As per a transfer update in The Athletic (subscription required), Liverpool defender Nat Phillips could leave the club on loan with Middlesbrough among a number of clubs interested.
Phillips, 26, who has two years remaining in his contract at Anfield, is keen on playing regular first-team football. It is highly unlikely he gets that at Liverpool.
Earlier in the window, the defender was linked with a move to another Championship club Leeds United. But, that move did not go through for some reason.
Reds are willing to listen to both permanent and loan offers for him. Let’s see what comes up in the final few days of this transfer window.
While Phillips is a decent centre-back, it has always felt like he isn’t good enough to play regularly for a team like Liverpool. We won’t forget his contributions during the second half of the 2020/21 season though, where a partnership with Rhys Williams allowed Jurgen Klopp to play midfielders in their right positions following an injury crisis and win the necessary games to qualify for the Champions League.
Although that was good, those sorts of situations do not come very often. At 26, Phillips is at an age where he is bound to expect regular football.
Let’s hope for his sake that a club makes a definite offer and he goes there before the Friday night deadline. Even if it is a loan move, he can go to that club, do well and hopefully earn a permanent deal in due course.
For Liverpool though, regardless of what happens with Phillips, they must try hard to sign a centre-back. The need for a young defender is there in the squad to make it complete in the defensive department.
