Liverpool set to rival Real Madrid in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe next summer
According to French outlet L’Equipe (h/t the Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are in contention for the signatures of Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe next summer.
The Reds have held a long-standing interest in the French international, and they may make a bid to bring in the 24-year-old, who has been a hot target for Real Madrid.
Mbappe initially came up through the ranks at AS Monaco before joining PSG in the summer of 2017 on a season-long loan, which was made permanent by PSG in 2018. Over the years, the World Cup winner has consistently improved and is now considered one of the top forwards in global football, attracting significant interest in his talents.
Many clubs are interested in signing the French World Cup winner, with Los Blancos being the most probable destination. However, L’Equipe suggests that Liverpool also have a chance to secure his services.
Mbappe’s ultimate aspiration is to play for Madrid, and the Spanish club is also keen on bringing him on board. Originally, it was expected that he would join the La Liga giants as a free agent in the summer of 2022, but the French ace ended up extending his contract instead.
The PSG star recently signed a two-year contract with an option to extend it for an additional year. During the transfer window, he communicated his intention not to extend it by 12 months, making him a free agent in the summer of 2024.
The Ligue 1 side, reluctant to lose him without compensation, initially excluded him from first-team training. However, after productive discussions between the club and the player, he has returned to training.
With his contract expiring in under 12 months, Mbappe‘s future remains uncertain for now. Madrid are expected to pursue his services next summer, but they are likely to face competition from Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side has been interested in the world-class player for a while, and his availability on a free transfer could make it more financially feasible for them to pursue him.
