“Difficult time” – Liverpool ace admits it was frustrating to be sidelined with injury last season

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz is pleased to be back after a complicated injury period last season

Liverpool star Luis Diaz has admitted that he went through a frustrating time last season after being sidelined due to an injury.

The South American talent has had an impressive start to the season for the Reds, bouncing back from a challenging period of injuries. Among the various issues Liverpool faced last season, the absence of Diaz was clearly noticeable.

Even as the team struggled in the early stages of the 2022-23 campaign following a gruelling 63-game season, the Colombian international remained one of the few players whose performance level didn’t drop.

The 26-year-old stood out as one of the few positive aspects of Jurgen Klopp’s team a year ago, when they struggled during the early stages of the season. However, his promising run came to an abrupt halt when he suffered a knee injury following a challenge with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.

This injury required surgery, and he had to return to Merseyside after the operation. He then had to patiently wait until April to make his comeback.

The former FC Porto star Diaz returned to the field as a second-half substitute during a dominant 6-1 win over Leeds United on April 17. He also managed to score in an exciting victory over Tottenham at the end of that month.

However, there wasn’t much pressure on Diaz during his comeback. The fans had a reason to worry that the winger might face difficulties in reaching his peak performance until this season. He was given the advantage of a full injury-free pre-season, and that has helped him a lot.

As quoted by the club’s official website, the Liverpool winger was asked about his injury experience from last season and how he came out of it. And he said:

“It was a difficult and complicated time for me. Not being able to be there at every game with the team is very frustrating. I tried hard not to overthink things or pay much attention to negative things so my head wouldn’t be swimming with all these thoughts.”

Having scored two goals this season, against Chelsea and Bournemouth, Diaz is beginning to resemble the player who convinced Klopp to sign him for Anfield from Porto in January 2022.

The No. 7 is a valuable asset in Liverpool’s diverse and lethal forward line, featuring alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota. Klopp has a wealth of talent at his disposal, and the Columbian winger will be working to fully integrate himself into his manager’s plans this season.

The initial stages of the season have been enjoyable, as the fans saw a rejuvenated Liverpool team. It’s evident that Diaz is making significant strides towards securing a long-term role within the squad.
