Peterborough chief claims Liverpool are interested in Benjamin Arthur
Peterborough United Chairman Darragh MacAnthony recently shed light on the interest of Liverpool in England Under-18 international Benjamin Arthur during the latest episode of The Hard Truth Podcast. MacAnthony, a passionate Reds supporter himself, delved into how the transfer saga unfolded and Liverpool’s role in the pursuit of the talented youngster.
Arthur, who was garnering attention at Posh eventually moved to Brentford snubbing a move to the Reds in the Bees’ favour. Here is what MacAnthony revealed (h/t Liverpool Echo) before the player moved to Brentford with respect to the interest of Liverpool:
“The England under-18 manager said he was one of the best centre-backs at that age, let alone for England, and it just set off a whole thing during July and August that all the top clubs, like my Liverpool, hadn’t been to a Posh game and they were coming to our under-21 games, first time I had seen them, and they were all looking at Benji.”
“We had a price which was nearly a record for a League One scholar, plus millions in add ons, as I think he will be in their first team in three years’ time.”
“And knowing Brentford, they will probably sell him for £60 or £70 million. We have a solid sell on, so we will make millions off it.”
Liverpool’s interest in Benjamin Arthur highlighted their ongoing commitment to scouting and securing emerging talent for the future. The club’s reputation for nurturing young players remains well-established, making our club an attractive destination for promising prospects.
The chairman also touched upon Brentford’s shrewd transfer dealings, suggesting that the Bees could potentially sell Arthur for a substantial fee in the future which could mean that Peterborough would also make loads of money thanks to their sell-on clause. MacAnthony sees Arthur make it to the Brentford first-team in less than three years time, and that is a testament to the player’s talent, for his age at least.
What next for the Reds?
MacAnthony underlined the significance of Benjamin Arthur’s abilities, particularly in the eyes of the England Under-18 manager, who regarded him as one of the best young centre-backs. This recognition elevated Arthur’s profile, making him a target for a multitude of top clubs.
Furthermore, MacAnthony revealed that Liverpool’s interest extended beyond mere curiosity. During July and August, Liverpool scouts were notably present at Peterborough United’s under-21 games, an indication of their keen interest in the player.
While Liverpool’s pursuit of Benjamin Arthur did not culminate in his arrival at Anfield, the club’s interest underscored their dedication to identifying and acquiring emerging talent. Liverpool’s scouting network and commitment to youth development remain integral components of their long-term strategy.
