Liverpool failed with £100m bid for Brazilian superstar this summer

Liverpool made an unsuccessful attempt to land Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes this summer

According to the Spanish outlet AS (h/t The Daily Star), Premier League giants Liverpool failed with a blockbuster late transfer bid for Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes earlier this summer.

The Brazilian was among the driving forces for the Magpies last season as they finished in the top four to secure UEFA Champions League football. This earned him several plaudits and enhanced his image in the game with several clubs keeping tabs.

Liverpool were always bound to revamp their midfield roster in the summer and several players were looked at. The Reds were aware of Guimaraes’s talents before he moved to Tyneside and it is no surprise that they approached Newcastle in the summer.

The Reds brought in Alexis Mac Alister and Dominik Szoboszlai early on but waited until August to make further moves. It was noit for a lack of effort as bids for Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo got nowhere.

Jurgen Klopp and co eventually went on to add Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch from VfB Stuttgart and Bayern Munich respectively. It could have been a lot more high profile had we been able to land Guimaraes.

Klopp was keen to bring in the 25-year-old and the Reds made a mammoth £100million bid that would have made the Brazilian our club record signing. However, Newcastle were having none of it and swiftly rejected the offer.

Given that Guimaraes is a key cog in the Magpies’ system, it us understandable that they were keen to retain him. Thankfully we went on to add Gravenberch on deadline day and it could prove to be a brilliant move come the next few years.

Guimaraes and Newcastle have not had the best of starts this season and also succumbed to a 2-1 loss to Liverpool at St James Park. As of yet, we have not come to regret missing out on any of our targets so far. Hopefully, that trend will continue.
