Liverpool showed interest in dynamic Serie A-winning midfield star this summer

Liverpool were keen on signing Eljif Elmas from Napoli

The Reds’ pursuit of midfield reinforcements during the summer transfer window took them on a journey to explore various options. While Liverpool eventually secured the signatures of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch, it has now come to light that Napoli’s Eljif Elmas was also on their radar.

Corriere dello Sport stated that Elmas was someone Liverpool ‘wanted’, adding the Reds ‘would have gone so far as to offer £25m for his services. However, Napoli stood firm and resolutely rejected Liverpool’s advances. It’s a testament to their commitment to holding onto one of their prized midfield talents.

The 23-year-old versatile midfielder hailing from North Macedonia, emerged as a potential target for Liverpool and would have fit our plans well. But such is the domino effect in football. If we got Elmas on board, Szoboszlai would probably have not made the switch to the Reds. In any case, Liverpool are not among the clubs who greatly regret not signing a player, but we rather focus on getting the best out of what we have available.

While the pursuit of Elmas didn’t yield the desired result for Liverpool, it’s important to note that this is not necessarily a great loss for the club. The reason lies in the tremendous potential and quality that Liverpool’s summer signings bring to the midfield.

Is Not Signing Elmas A Big Loss For The Reds?

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, in particular, have already showcased their abilities and have the potential to excel in a Liverpool shirt. Their performances during the early stages of the season have been promising, and they offer creative and dynamic options in midfield.

Wataru Endo, with his experience and versatility, adds valuable depth to Liverpool’s squad. He brings a different dimension to the midfield, providing defensive solidity and composure on the ball.

Ryan Gravenberch, a highly-rated young talent, has the potential to develop into a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield in the coming years. His inclusion reflects Liverpool’s vision of building for the future while maintaining competitiveness in the present.

In football, not every pursuit ends with a signature on the dotted line. Liverpool’s pursuit of Eljif Elmas may not have materialized, but the club’s focus on building a formidable midfield unit remains intact. The coming season promises to be an exciting one, with Liverpool’s midfield poised for success with the talent they have at their disposal.
