Former Liverpool favourite reveals regret at missing out on 2019-20 PL winning campaign

Daniel Sturridge opens up on his time at Liverpool and makes PL claim

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has opened up about his regrets regarding his departure from Anfield in the summer of 2019, just after Liverpool’s Champions League triumph.

Sturridge, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage, enjoyed a successful spell at Liverpool, scoring 67 goals in 120 appearances for the club after joining from Chelsea in January 2013. However, his Liverpool career remained plagued by recurring injuries.

Despite an initially bright start, where he formed a devastating partnership with Luis Suarez and scored 21 league goals in the 2013/14 season, injuries would hinder Sturridge’s role in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad. He often saw himself relegated to a bit-part player due to his physical setbacks.

Speaking to NOW TV, Sturridge was asked which great Premier League-winning side he would have liked to play in. And while the boyhood Arsenal fan initially picked the Gunners’ Invincibles sides of 2003/04, he also admitted he’d wished he’d been able to stay at Anfield for another season.

“But of course, winning the Premier League with my teammates when I left Liverpool the season after would’ve been nice to be a part of that, to experience that with the guys considering all the years I spent with them.”

Studge sat on the bench as an unused substitute in the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Following the expiration of his contract that summer, Sturridge left Liverpool as a free agent. And ironically, as you know, the Reds would go on to win the Premier League title in the following season and achieve numerous other honours under Klopp’s management, further deepening Sturridge’s sense of regret.

These comments from Sturridge provide insight into his emotional connection with Liverpool and his desire to have been part of the historic Premier League-winning squad.

It’s clear that his time at Liverpool left a lasting impact on him, and he remains appreciative of the camaraderie and success he shared with his former teammates.
