Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo comments on controversial decisions against Tottenham
Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo believes several “difficult decisions” went against his side during Saturday’s controversial 2-1 defeat at Tottenham. We suffered our first loss this season in dramatic fashion thanks to some of the poorest refereeing seen in recent times.
The game featured multiple flashpoints, including Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota both seeing a red for the Reds. Spurs also benefited from a mistakenly disallowed Luis Diaz goal where VAR failed to overturn the on-field call.
In an interview on Liverpool’s official website (h/t Liverpool Echo), Endo commented on how disappointed he was to be unable to secure a point for his side and how difficult it was to play with nine players.

“At the end, a very tough game, but there were 50-50 decisions in the game, and yeah, it’s very difficult to play with nine players, but I wanted to get one point, so I am very disappointed about it. I am just so proud of this team. I am just disappointed. We have to learn from this result, and of course we showed our spirit; even though we faced difficult decisions, we fought until the end.
Despite the adversity, Wataru Endo was proud of Liverpool’s effort and spirit playing two men down. But he felt key moments shaped the difficult result. Endo singled out teammate Joel Matip for praise despite the defender’s stoppage-time own goal sealing Tottenham’s win.
“Actually, he played an amazing game today, so no-one can say something to him. I am so proud of what he did today, and I am so proud of what my teammates did today.”
Manager Jurgen Klopp was furious over the controversial officiating after the match. But Endo chose to focus on the positives from Liverpool’s performance in trying circumstances. In many ways, it is heartening to see that the players are up for a fight.
The Reds will be boosted by the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) admitting errors were made by VAR during the match. However, that will offer little consolation given the impact of the decisions on the outcome.
