Liverpool to appeal red card decision in Tottenham Hotspur loss

Liverpool to appeal Curtis Jones’ red card against Tottenham Hotspur

The Reds, under Jurgen Klopp, have been one of the most disciplined squads in the Premier League. However, this season, with a number of changes in the referring rules, Liverpool have already overseen four red cards this season, including two in the same game. Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota saw themselves sent off in the game against Tottenham Hotspur.

While Jota’s second challenge was reckless, and probably deserved a yellow, the first caution is still a question mark. Speaking of Curtis, he was initially shown a yellow card for his “tackle” on Yves Bissouma, but a VAR replay later, that was changed to a direct red. In his defence, Jones’ ankle slipped off the ball to clip Bissouma’s shin and that is what makes this call rather controversial.

However, the Reds have made a conscious decision to make an appeal against the issuance of Jones’ red card. That is via ECHO.

Appealing the red card issued to Curtis Jones is a clear indication of Liverpool’s willingness to challenge perceived injustices and advocate for their players’ rights. While the outcome of the appeal remains uncertain, the club’s determination to pursue it reflects their dedication to upholding the principles of fairness and integrity in football.

Unfair red for Curtis?

Earlier this season, the Reds successfully managed to challenge a red card shown to Alexis Mac Allister and saw the suspension rescinded. While it does not give away a good impression to say things like this, the game has in a sense, gone soft.

As Liverpool navigate a season marked by a series of disciplinary incidents, this appeal serves as a reminder that the club values the welfare and reputation of its players. Too many cautions certainly do not add up in a positive manner.

One downside of this appeal is the fact that if the verdict is not in the Reds’ favour, Curtis Jones could see himself suspended for another game, taking the tally of missed games to four instead of three.

As the appeal unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Curtis Jones will have his suspension lifted, allowing him to return to action for the Reds.
