Debate rages after Liverpool release a statement blasting match- losing VAR mistake
Debate is swirling after Liverpool took the rare step of releasing an official statement slamming VAR following their controversial 2-1 loss at Tottenham.
The Reds lost their first game of the season in quite a dramatic fashion with Joel Matip scoring a last-minute own-goal after being reduced to nine men.
As covered by the Mirror, The Reds were furious when Luis Diaz‘s first-half goal was wrongly disallowed for offside by VAR in the eventful match. The Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) admitted a “significant human error” and apologized.
In response, Liverpool accused the mistake of undermining “sporting integrity” in a scathing statement. The Reds also said they will “explore the range of options available” regarding recourse.
The extraordinary criticism from Liverpool follows other recent officiating controversies. PGMOL chief Howard Webb is under immense pressure with VAR still struggling for consistency.
The PGMOL have spent a considerable sum of money in recent times in order to improve the accuracy of the VAR. However, they are facing immense criticism after the news of potential overwork came to light regarding the VAR officials of the Liverpool vs. Tottenham clash.
It was revealed that VAR operators Darren England and Dan Cook. were part of a team that was refereeing in UAE 48 hours earlier. The long flight following the UAE match would have definitely impacted them.
This incident has exposed simmering tensions over VAR’s rocky implementation. While change is needed, care must be taken to avoid irreparable damage through inflammatory actions.
