Carlos Mac Allister reveals how Liverpool won the race to land Alexis Mac Allister
Speaking exclusively to the Liverpool Echo, Carlos Mac Allister, the father of Alexis Mac Allister revealed how the Merseysiders won the race to land the Argentine World Cup winner earlier last summer.
The 24-year-old came off a sensational 2022-23 season that saw him not just help Brighton qualify for Europe but also win the World Cup with Argentina. Mac Allister’s rise to prominence has been coming for some time now and last season he exploded onto the scene.
Liverpool were keen to rebuild their midfield in the summer and Mac Allister ticked several boxes. Apart from his experience and technical proficiency, the ability to shine in high pressure environments without downing performance levels is a major plus. He has gotten off to a good start at Anfield and is steadily emerging as a crowd favourite.
Several clubs were keen on Mac Allister but it was Liverpool who beat them to the punch. In fact, the Reds landed him for a measly £35 million thanks to a release clause in his contract. In today’s market ,such a price for a world-class player is nothing short of daylight robbery.
Liverpool were very keen to have the 24-year-old in their ranks and this interest paid dividends. Carlos has now revealed that the club being keen to land the player was a major factor in them winning the transfer race.
“The reason why Alexis went to Liverpool is because they showed so much interest in having him on their team.”
Jurgen Klopp has charm in abundance and it showed in Mac Allister’s case as well. The German’s phone call helped title the balance in Liverpool’s favour. Working under such a good man-manager is clearly good for the Argentine’s long term development.
“Jurgen Klopp was crucial a figure in the transfer. He was talking with Alexis. When he received the phone call from Jurgen it was important in deciding which team he should choose to play for.”
Mac Allister is certainly loved and respected at Anfield. It was seen when he was taken off against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this season. The fact that Klopp sat alongside him and helped him understand the tactical move was clear to anyone paying attention to the sidelines. It surely shows that the Argentine will benefit greatly from Klopp’s tactical acumen and man management.
