Liverpool star Curtis Jones to serve three-match ban for the red card he picked up at Tottenham
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones will serve a three-game Premier League suspension following an unsuccessful appeal of his red card picked up against Tottenham on Saturday according to Liverpool’s official website.
Jones was initially shown a yellow card for a tackle on Spurs’ Yves Bissouma. But referee Simon Hooper upgraded it to red after consulting the VAR pitchside monitor. Liverpool appealed the decision but saw their case rejected. Curtis Jones will now be banned from the Reds’ upcoming league fixtures against Brighton, Everton, and Nottingham Forest.
Jones seemed unfortunate as replays showed his foot slipped before contacting Bissouma. But the challenge was deemed serious foul play, warranting a sending-off and three-match suspension.
Liverpool hoped to see the dismissal rescinded like Alexis Mac Allister’s red card earlier this season. However, their appeal was denied after review. The images shown to Hooper on the monitor during the game apparently did not follow standard VAR protocol. This likely fueled Liverpool’s appeal, but it was unsuccessful.
Liverpool have suffered their first loss of the season in quite the dramatic fashion. Joel Matip‘s last-minute own goal sealed the deal for the Reds in a match mired with controversy. By the end, Liverpool had been down to ten men with Diego Jota and Jones sent off.
Liverpool felt Jones was harshly punished after his foot slipped. However, the FA confirmed referee Hooper made the right decision upon review.

The 22-year-old Jones, however. remains eligible for Liverpool’s Europa League match against Union SG on Thursday, since the ban only applies domestically.
