Liverpool will be ‘keeping an eye’ on talented RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda
Speaking to Caught Offside (h/t Liverpool Echo), Bild journalist Christian Falk has revealed that Liverpool will be ‘keeping an eye’ on the progress of talented RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda who has had a blistering start to life in Germany.
The 23-year-old is one of the hottest prospects going around following his contributions for the German club. The interest in him is understandable as he looks like he has all the attributes required to succeed at the highest level.
The Belgium attacking sensation joined Leipzig in the summer and has already been linked with a move away from the club. It seems almost unfathomable to think that Openda would leave so soon after joining the Bundesliga club.
Very rarely have we seen a player who has joined a club in the summer move on so quickly to another club unless things don’t work out. We saw it with Enzo Fernandez last season but he was ready for the step up to Chelsea. Lois Openda might not yet be ready for Liverpool.
The 23-year-old has appeared in 10 matches so far for Leipzig while scoring five goals and two assists in all competitions. He is extremely versatile and capable of playing in all the positions in the forward line.
A willing runner with excellent pace and acceleration who also has the footballing IQ at such a young age, anyone who sees Openda play will understand what the hype about him is. That said, he is still very raw and not the finished product.
Here is what Falk had to say about the Reds keeping an eye on Openda and it makes sense
“Leipzig are a little relaxed at the moment, as next summer there’s no active release clause for Lois Openda. It begins in 2025 and I heard it’s a bit higher than the €80m (£69m) that has been reported elsewhere. I’m sure that clubs like Liverpool will be keeping an eye on him. You’ve already seen with Dominik Szoboszlai that they’ve had a mostly positive experience with RB Leipzig players”
Liverpool’s positive experience with players from the Red Bull clubs could be down to the fact of how similar the playing styles are. Klopp being German himself and a disciple of Ralf Rangnick is a big advocate of the gegen pressing football that RB Leipzig are synonymous with.

Ideally, Openda must stay at the German club for a couple of seasons and hone his game. He’ll then be ready to make the step up to the bigger teams and don’t be surprised if Liverpool come calling. It almost feels inevitable.
