Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp used his wisdom to help Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi with his temper
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that he used his age to calm Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi.
The Reds drew 2-2 against Brighton in the high-intensity Premier League game at Falmer Stadium on Sunday. Both clubs showed incredibly high pressing and free-flowing attacking football which kept everyone’s emotions at the extremities.
De Zerbi lost control of his emotions when the referee rightfully denied the Seagulls a penalty. The ball ricocheted from Virgil van Dijk’s thigh into his arm inside the penalty box. Klopp decided to intervene as De Zerbi kept on berating the officials even after getting a yellow card for his dissent.
The Liverpool boss talked to the media (h/t Liverpool’s official site) about the incident during his post-match interview. Klopp explained that he was just looking out for the Brighton manager, someone he respects a lot. He said:
“I have to say, I cannot respect more, could not respect more, what he is doing. In the moment when he got a bit outraged, I used my age and tried to calm him down. I had no clue what they were talking about, I just saw if I am in a moment like this, there is a moment, or a point, [that] you never come back appears. I think he was close to that and then I tried to calm him down. I am not sure if he needed it or not, you can ask him”
Klopp has had his fair share of angry moments during his career as the German wears his heart on his sleeves. The German has always humbly apologized whenever he felt he had crossed the line.
De Zerbi appeared to approach the point where he was on the verge of saying something he would later regret. Fortunately for the Brighton manager, his counterpart intervened to calm him down.
Both the German and Italian share a high level of mutual respect towards each other. The respect stems from their love for football and because they value the development of players over buying success.
Brighton have played a lot of beautiful football under the Italian as the club is working like a well-oiled machine. The Seagulls have done brilliant recruitment combined with De Zerbi’s coaching style to develop remarkable talents despite selling first-team players.
