Gary Neville says Liverpool have a better chance of winning the Premier League than Tottenham

We all know what they say of Tottenham. Their trophy cabinet might have caught a lot of dust by now. Jokes aside, under new manager Ange Postecoglou, Spurs have looked a brilliant side and are one of the two unbeaten sides in the English top flight alongside North London rivals Arsenal.

However, even with their top form, former Manchester United captain and pundit Gary Neville feels that Liverpool sit better placed than Spurs to win the Premier League title. Alongside a few other bold predictions, he claimed that Tottenham will have to keep their players fit to have a run at the title.

The questions were only about the Reds’ defensive solidity going forward. Our attackers and our midfielders would win us many games, as is the case with our goalie, Alisson Becker. According to Neville, it is probably just the defensive prowess that is holding Liverpool back by just a bit, but Jurgen Klopp’s men are closer to the title than Ange’s boys are.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast via football.london, here is what he had to say on the Reds in the title race:

“I think they could, they are more likely to than Spurs. They played against a really good Brighton side, they’ve got an outstanding goalkeeper that I always think will keep them in a lot of football matches and they’ve got strikers who can score a lot of goals. The midfield is attacking, has it got the defensive stability of what we have seen here today [at Arsenal and Manchester City]?,”

Do the Reds need defensive reinforcements?

Most Liverpool fans would agree with what Neville had to say. Our defensive depth is certainly not ideal by any measure. Too many injury-prone central defenders and that has seen the centre-back pairing chop and change almost every second game.

The likes of Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are top-class players, but if they are unavailable when the big games come calling, questions need to be raised. Keeping Neville’s analysis [that is right for a change] as the focal point, the Reds need to explore the market for some versatile defenders.

Liverpool could do with some defensive reinforcements.

The likes of Piero Hincapie can play left-back and left centre-back. There are a number of options that the Reds can explore come the summer transfer window, or even better, the January window. If that could happen, Liverpool can surely win the Premier League and beyond.

The comparisons with Tottenham though, let’s keep that aside for the time being. There is still a long way for our friends from North London to come to par with us, and hopefully, that is never.
