Liverpool could move for Max Eberl to replace Jorg Schmadtke
Liverpool signed Jorg Schmadtke before the 2023 summer transfer window to help them with transfers and have now been alerted to the availability of former RB Leipzig man Max Eberl.
Eberl was let go in September after Leipzig called into question his commitment to the club. This comes at a time when he continues to be linked with a move to Bayern Munich. It is fair to say that the German champions now have a free run at landing the 50-year-old.
Or that is what they thought. Liverpool extended Schamdtke’s stay at Anfield after his summer stint but the jury is still out on the German. While the Reds did well in the summer to revamp their midfield, it can be argued that they could’ve done better. Given the success that Michael Edwards and Julian Ward have had at Anfield, the bar is set quite high.
Eberl is a top candidate for the sporting director’s post and has a reputation for signing top talents. He has a wealth of experience having worked with Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig and could now be set for a shot at the big time.
The 50-year-old was responsible for bringing the likes of Marco Reus, Granit Xhaka and Marc Andre Ter Stegen among others to the Bundesliga. Not a bad rap sheet for a candidate. According to Bild, Liverpool have already made contact with Eberl and will now hope to get the deal over the line.
The Reds have a promising young squad being put together but have some gaps that need to be plugged. More so, recruitment needs to have the Midas touch they had under Edwards, something that has not been so apparent under Schmadtke. Signing Eberl should give the Reds’ recruitment policy fresh blood and new ideas could help them turn the tide in the transfer market.
An advantage the Reds could have is that the 50-year-old is also represented by Marc Kosicke, Jurgen Klopp’s agent. The German manager has had to work under constraints at Anfield. There is no reason why he cannot once again take the Reds to the top of domestic and European football provided he gets the right backing off the field. A shared vision is key and Everl could very well prove to be the apt replacement for Edwards that we have been crying out for.
Smart recruitment has always been the bedrock of Liverpool’s success under FSG. Eberl’s eye for talent perfectly complements Jurgen Klopp’s style and the 50-year-old could prove to be a massive difference-maker at Anfield.

Schmadtke might have done alright in the summer but it can be argued that we need someone with a better vision and is more decisive in the transfer market. While moving to Bayern will prove tempting, Eberl has a chance to be a part of something special at Liverpool. Whether that will come to pass remains to be seen.
