We will have to go back a long time to check which was the last international break was injury-free for Liverpool and their players. The latest entrant, to that list, as we all know is Scotland captain Andy Robertson who suffered a shoulder issue against Spain.
Following a scan on the issue, from the look of things, Robertson could most likely miss the Reds’ Merseyside Derby at home on 21st October. While Kostas Tsimikas can put in more than just a shift, it is Robbo’s leadership on the pitch that we are on course to miss the most.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke talked about Robbo’s injury and provided an update on the same speaking to the press ahead of the Scots’ friendly clash against France.
Here is what Clarke had to say on Robbo via ECHO:
“As always with injured players, we send them back to their club; Andy’s gone back to Liverpool. Liverpool will deal with his injury. Obviously it’s a shoulder issue and Liverpool will deal with it.”
Coming off as if Robbo isn’t the national captain, and is only Liverpool’s responsibility, Clarke. While there’s not much Scotland could have done after the injury, the coach should be much more careful with his words as his statement seems like he is least bothered with the situation.
While the interpretation might be wrong, the focus should move to rehab and recovery as soon as possible. Robertson is too important a player to miss a lot of games and the emphasis should be on seeing him return to the pitch as soon as possible, and at 100%.
Robertson is not only a key player for his club but also a leader and an influential figure on the field. His importance to Liverpool’s defensive stability and attacking impetus cannot go overstated. He has a goal in eight appearances for the Reds across all competitions this season.
Tsimikas will have big shoes to fill but given how he has fared in the past, it is not a major worry as we know Kostas can compete with Robbo for the starting spot.
The Merseyside Derby is always a crucial fixture, and Liverpool fans will hope for Robertson’s swift recovery.
