Liverpool and Arsenal remain keen on Athletic Club star Nico Williams
Nico Williams has been a star for Spanish side Athletic Club and continues to attract attention from English bigwigs Liverpool and Arsenal.
The 21-year-old is yet another gem who came through the ranks at the Basque outfit but with his contract expiring in the summer of 2024, he could be on the move sooner rather than later.
Williams is primarily a right-winger who can also be deployed on the opposite flank. A pacy dribbler who is quite mobile and difficult to mark, he would suit Jurgen Klopp’s brand of football to a tee.
According to 90min (h/t The Express), Liverpool and Arsenal are among the clubs keeping a close watch on the developments at the San Mames. Athletic Club still expect Williams to extend his current deal but uncertainty will only seep deeper the closer we get to the summer of 2024.
The Spanish international’s fate will be a hot topic of conversation in the 2024 January transfer window. Not only will he be free to discuss terms with foreign clubs on a pre-agreement but the window also gives Athletic Club the final opportunity to cash in rather than lose him for a free at the end of the campaign.
The next Salah?
While Williams is far from the finished product, his potential and attributes make him a potentially world-class talent. For Liverpool landing such a player for free could prove priceless, especially if Mohamed Salah is moved on. The Egyptian ace is the Reds’ go-to attacker but is attracting interest from several Saudi Arabian sides.
Despite being 31, Salah still commands a huge following and continues to be one of the best players in the world. He is also the poster boy of football in the Muslim world and there is every chance to believe that Liverpool can land themselves a truckload of cash by selling Salah to a Saudi Arabian giant. Bringing in Williams on a free will not just give Jurgen Klopp a replacement on the cheap but also help him re-invest the money received from Salah into other areas of the squad.
With the defence needing some tinkering, it could prove to be a godsend to the Reds’ recruitment team. But there is still a long way to go and we will face plenty of competition for the Spanish international’s signature.

Liverpool continues to be linked to several players as Salah’s future at the club continues to be called into question. Williams might not be as dynamic as the likes of Jamal Musiala but is a better fit for the position and the system that Salah thrives in. Time will tell whether the 21-year-old will be the next Reds’ winger to take the world by storm.
